India in Dire Need of a Plastic Revolution

Introduction

While 5.5 million metric tonnes or 60% of plastic waste undergoes recycling in India every year, the remaining 40% goes unprocessed and results in litter. The latter goes on to cause large-scale pollution, choking of drains, and other serious environmental issues.

Plastic waste is dumped into landfills at exceedingly high rates i.e. 2.5 million tonnes every year and is incinerated at a rate of 1 million tonnes/year.

By 2030, it is expected that a whopping 73% worth of material utilised in plastic packaging amounting to a total of $133 bn will be lost and never salvaged. Read on to learn more about the current end scenario and the way we can combat the ever-increasing plastic waste levels!

Present-Day End Usage Scenario

With waste management mechanisms falling short, plastic pollution is growing at an alarming rate. Despite 94% virgin PET being used to carry out packaging for food and non-food items, only a negligible amount of recycled PET is made back into bottles. More than 95% of rPET is currently used for applications such as fibers, yarns etc.

It is, therefore, the right time to adopt a broader approach in the form of ambitious designs, material considerations, and use-phase product delivery innovations, among other things and move towards a circular economy.

Developed countries across the globe have already started using rPET for making bottles with more than 35% of rPET made back into bottles. With government regulations & customer awareness, India is now expected to follow suit. It is being said that the demand for rPET bottles in India can grow up to 1 million tonnes by 2030.

How to Move Towards a Circular Economy?

Government regulations, in addition to customer initiative, will play a key role in bringing about the “Greener Packaging” revolution.

From 2025, India is all set to pave the way for the usage of 30% recycled PET in packaging applications as our country starts to move towards a circular plastic economy.
