The India Plastics Pact 2021 – 22 Annual Report: The Ultimate Catalyst to Tackle Plastic Pollution
Plastic pollution is a pressing environmental concern. The rampant use of plastic in various industries has caused a substantial threat to our ecosystem and it has drastically deteriorated our natural environment while also impacting human health. Endeavoring to combat this alarming global crisis, the India Plastics Pact laid down its foundation in 2021 as a pioneer collaborative initiative, unifying stakeholders from across the plastics value chain to efficiently tackle plastic wastes and to create a circular economy for plastics.
The India Plastics Pact 2021-22 Annual Report highlights the phenomenal progress made by the efforts of its stakeholders who worked together for a positive change and did their bit in creating a sustainable future. This succinct blog gives a birds-eye view of the India Plastics Pact 2021-22 Annual Report, delving into the key accomplishments achieved by the 47 IPP members and its supporter organizations, and the next targets.
Envisioning to eliminate, innovate and circulate the mounting piles of plastic wastes, the India Plastics Pact established it’s four key targets to curb plastic waste –
Target 1 : To define the problematic plastic packaging items and address those through redesign and innovation.
Target 2 : To ensure that 100% of plastic packaging be reusable, recyclable or compostable.
Target 3 : To ensure 50% of plastic packaging be effectively recycled.
Target 4 : To ensure at least 25% of average recycled content across all kinds of plastic packaging
The Pact therefore focuses on circulating the plastic items in the economy in order to reshape the otherwise problematic plastic crisis in India. Also, working on its “Roadmap to 2030”, the 47 signatory members in the Pact made meaningful progress right from the very onset of the Pact in September 2021.
Companies such as Godrej and Boyce Manufacturing Ltd, to name a few, introduced sustainable and eco-friendly packaging alternatives, thereby significantly cutting down the use of single-use plastics. While ITC Limited inculcated several positive changes, replacing its plastic cutlery with wooden cutlery, other members too, made significant design changes to enhance the overall recyclability of their plastic packaging.
The India Plastics Pact therefore strives to conserve India’s ecosystem and rich biodiversity by fostering close collaboration between the various businesses, Government, NGOs and the civil society to promote innovation and bring forth an environmental friendly change, ensuring to curb the problematic plastic landscape of India. With a strategic vision for a sustainable future, the IPP Report is a cornerstone for creating a sustainable future and driving a transformative change.
Envisioning to fructify and accomplish the targets set up by the IPP, Go Rewise that is backed by Ganesha Ecosphere Ltd. is dedicated to resource preservation and the promotion of sustainability by effectively transforming plastics into high-quality products through efficient recycling processes. The company is a pioneer in manufacture of rPET fibre from the consumer PET bottle scrap. With its PAN India network of scrap dealers and contractors, the company collects and processes about 350 tons of PET plastic wastes on a daily basis. This waste is then recycled to create sustainable and eco-friendly solutions which are a boon for the environment.
Go Rewise has also exhibited its unwavering commitment with the IPP, to which it is a signatory. Go Rewise is making sure to leave no stone unturned to help IPP achieve its targets.
To achieve Target 1, Go Rewise has alone ushered in technological innovation in the vast Indian packaging market. It produces FDA approved rPET at a commercial scale and has worked through and through on redesigning and innovation.
To achieve Target 2, Go Rewise has been closely working with and advising brands to switch to recyclable materials and support eco-friendly packaging such as rPET which is 100% reusable, recyclable and compostable.
To achieve Target 3, Go Rewise stands tall at the forefront to build various sustainable rPET products, ensuring end-to-end recycling of post consumer PET bottle wastes into valuable and eco-friendly solutions.
To achieve Target 4, Go Rewise has been working hard to recycle at least 25 percent of all of India’s PET bottle wastes by 2025. The company has a vast PAN India network of about 250+ suppliers of post consumer wastes PET bottles and the company is striving hard to attain its goal.
We urge you to come forward and be the real change maker by curbing plastic wastes. Join hands with IPP and Go Rewise on this journey to transform India’s otherwise problematic plastic landscape.
